Samba, January 2

A leopard was found dead near Druee village of Samba here today. The exact reason for the death of the four-year-old leopard was not known. However, no major injury marks were visible on its body.

The big cat was roaming in the vicinity of Samba and a few other villages for the past few weeks.

“The four-year-old male leopard’s body was found near the fields along the Samba-Mansar road in Druee village this morning. Villagers, on spotting the carcass, informed the forest and wildlife officials. A team of wildlife officials, after examining the body, shifted the carcass for its post-mortem to Manda Park in Jammu. The carcass was burnt after conducting the post-mortem,” said Priyanka Sareen, a wildlife officer.

A major part of the body was decomposed and the animal should have been dead for at least seven to eight days. There were no outer injury marks visible on the body apart from a deep injury on the head. It seemed that the leopard was hit by some vehicle. The exact cause of death could be found only after the post-mortem report, said the officer.
