Dehradun: Mansi Negi of Sri Guru Ram Rai Public School, Balawala, was awarded the best athlete title in the monthly road race organised by the Himalayan Running Club at Balawala, in Dehradun on Sunday.
In the weekend race, Negi, a class seventh student, surged ahead from the start of the U-15 girls' 2.5 km race and thereafter never looked back. She crossed the finish line in 10 minutes 45 seconds, which was marginally less than her personal best of 10 minutes 38 seconds clocked in the June edition of the race. Negi had been winning monthly road races for the past four months. Her overall performance mainly helped her clinched the best athlete award in the Sunday race.
Nidhi, also of Sri Guru Ram Rai Public School, Balawala, finished second while Aarti got the third place.
The boys' under-15 group was also dominated by Sri Guru Ram Rai Public School, Balawala, with Naveen Kumar winning the race in 9 minutes 11 seconds. Aman Pokhriyal had to content with second place. Rahul Purohit finished third in the field of 30 runners.
Overall more than 50 students participated in the monthly road race. Joshi, a local physical education teacher, gave away the prizes to the winners. Top six athletes in both the groups were given cash award. The next monthly race would be held on the last Sunday of August.
