Chandigarh, January 22

Acting on directions issued by UT Adviser Vijay Kumar Dev, the Municipal Corporation today removed the bamboo hedge, which had been installed at Hallo Mjara to hide the ugly side of the city during French President Francois Hollande’s visit. The 12-foot-high bamboo hedge was installed from the poultry farm roundabout to the Hallo Majra light point to cover haphazard construction and garbage in the village.

Sources said Dev took a serious note of the bamboo hedge being installed without the approval of the higher authorities. Dev ordered that the hedge should be removed immediately and a drive carried out to clean the area thoroughly.

Sources said soon after the issue came to his notice, the Adviser asked the Home Secretary and MC Commissioner to visit the area. Dev also issued directions to carry out a cleanliness drive in the entire city, besides the route to be taken by the French President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The engineering wing of the MC had installed the bamboo hedge as Hallo Majra village, situated along the route of the French President, presents a shoddy look due to encroachments and illegal construction. However, the move to install the hedge received a flak from people.
