Sandeep Singh Gill stood second in the tricity, with all-India rank 143, followed by Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, who secured all-India rank 184.

Nazuk has been a go-getter since childhood, says her father Anil Kumar, Principal Secretary-cum-Financial Commissioner, Haryana, and a former Home Secretary, UT, Chandigarh.

Sharing her success mantra, Nazuk says she firmly believes in smart work. “One must prepare for the Civil Services exam in a smart way. Besides, focus and study in the right direction are also imperative,” says Nazuk. Sandeep Singh Gill, who stood second in the tricity, is an assistant professor of English at SGGS College, Sector 26, Chandigarh. “This year, those who had appeared in 2011 were given a special chance. I cleared the exam and can’t believe that I have secured the 143rd rank,” says an ecstatic Sandeep.

He says, "One can achieve anything with determination and hard work. I’m grateful to my family, especially my five-year-old daughter, for loving me unconditionally and supporting me throughout.”

Candidates from other states, who took coaching in Chandigarh, did well in the exam. Among them was Gazal Bhardwaj, a 26-year-old girl who appeared from the city. She bagged all-India rank 40. She was followed by Rishi Tripathi, who secured the 45th rank, and Torul S Raveesh, who got the 49th rank. Ashish Dahiya secured the 53rd rank, followed by Rakesh from Hoshiarpur, who scored the 91st rank.

An alumna of GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, and qualified civil engineer, Gazal cleared the mains examination in her first attempt. A native of Roorkie, Uttarakhand, Gazal always dreamt of being in a position in which she could serve the public. She already has her future planned. “This is a great opportunity to serve the people, which a job of a civil engineer would not have provided me,” says the feisty young girl.

She adds that because of the nature of an IAS officer’s job, the interface of communication is large, hence the satisfaction is large, too.

Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Rakesh, who hails from Hoshiarpur and has secured the 91st rank, said this was his second attempt. “I am happy to have made it. I’m thankful to my family for the continued support they gave me during the preparations,” he said.

The first one from his family to have made it to the IAS, Rakesh said the key to his success was work hard and patience.
