Wireless Sensor Network for landslide monitoring

Students of Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications (AmritaWNA) have come up with a state-of-the-art system that gives advance warnings of landslides so that people can be safely evacuated before disaster strikes.

Students of Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications (AmritaWNA) have come up with a state-of-the-art system that gives advance warnings of landslides so that people can be safely evacuated before disaster strikes.

It is the only system in the world, developed by AmritaWNA that makes use of artificial intelligence and machine leaning techniques to monitor and detect landslides.

The project is jointly funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

AmritaWNA has issued early warnings about imminent landslides multiple times during 2009, 2011, 2013, 2018 and 2019 in Munnar and has managed to garner people's faith in the system, leading to early safety evacuation, saving many lives. The IoT technology used, allows the system to scale and multi-scale and the scientific validity of the same has been discussed in more than 50 journals across the world.

The University has been awarded the title for its efficacy in developing and deploying such a system in most landslide prone areas in both Western Ghats and Himalayas, by world's top scientists. — TNS
