A person has been arrested in connection with the killing of a forest guard allegedly by illegal miners, who ran a dumper truck over him, in the Jalwa forest area of Nainital district, the police said today.
The incident took place on Friday when the forest guard tried to stop illegal miners from lifting sand from the Kosi riverbed, a police official said.
The accused has been identified as Jasbir Singh. He was reportedly driving the dumper truck, Nainital SSP Janmejay Khanduri said.
Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat had yesterday announced ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh and a job to the widow of the forest guard. He also ordered that the divisional forest officer and the forest ranger be attached to the head office.
State Congress president Kishore Upadhyay, in a statement today, alleged that after the BJP came to power in the state law-and-order situation has deteriorated and the mining mafia was very active.
He demanded strict action against the accused and said a delegation of party leaders, led by him, would visit the site of the incident tomorrow and also meet the deceased’s widow.
Man held with liquor pouches
The Dehradun police arrested a man with 44 pouches of country-made liquor at Raipur on Sunday. The police arrested Salman Khan at the Dobhal chowk when he was smuggling liquor pouches. He was sent to jail.
A case of assault was registered in Patelnagar police station in Dehradun on Sunday. Veerandra in his complaint alleged that Ranjeet and Subhash Tomar had forcefully entered his house and assaulted him and his wife. The police are investigating the matter.
