Parvathy Baul, a renowned singer of the Baul song and dance form, enthralled students with the rendition of Baul music under the aegis of Spic Macay at The Asian School here yesterday. Parvathy Baul has been performing for the last 20 years in villages of West Bengal, and Kerala and many of the major music festivals in India, Europe, the USA, Japan and Singapore.
The performance began with the lighting of a lamp by Parvathy Baul. She introduced students to the typical Boul instruments such as Duggi, which is made from red clay, Ektara, which reminds us that God is one, and Nupur that symbolizes both Foddess Kali and Lord Krishna. She said the Boul music represented a particular type of folk song carrying influences of the Hindu Bhakti movement as well as a Sufi song form.
The audience was spellbound by the mellifluous rendition of songs, including verses of Saint Kabir which seemed to transport them to a world where they felt one with their creator. An interaction session followed the performance, in which students showed keen interest in asking questions to the artiste.
