To mark the 50th anniversary of statehood on November 1, the Punjab Government has embarked on a three-month programme to make all government primary school students well-versed in Punjabi.
To assess students’ knowledge of the language, all primary school students will undergo a test of Punjabi writing and reading in August.
Following the evaluation, the teachers will work for the next three months to improve the Punjabi language skill of every student. After the programme, students of Classes IV and V will be able to read and write Punjabi.
In a letter to all District Education Officers (DEOs), the school Education Department wants that minimum 80 per cent Class III students should have developed writing and reading skills in the next three months. For Class I and II students, the department has fixed a target of preparing minimum 60-70 per cent of students.
For the implementation of this project, PERVESH (Primary Vidya Sudhar) block and cluster coordinators are responsible.
The project has been started for creative and joyful learning in primary education. This programme aims to build a strong base among children in learning basic language skills, mathematics and desired curriculum through creative learning model of education.
Putting emphasis on improving Punjabi, the Education Department has told the schools that the students should not lag behind in reading and learning other subjects also during this three-month period.
In May, the Punjab Cabinet had given its approval for organising a series of functions to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the state.
