CSK HP Agriculture University (CSKHPAU) organised farmers-scientists interaction on the occasion of Rice Day at the Rice and Wheat Research Centre (RWRC) of the university here today.
Dr KK Katoch, Vice-Chancellor, while addressing farmers, scientists and agriculture officers, said decreasing farm land in the country was the major challenge before the farming community and agriculture scientists.
He said paddy (rice) was an important crop and the university had given two dozen high yielding paddy varieties for growing in different regions of the state.
He said early maturing varieties of paddy should be planted in order to have high yields before the onset of the winter season.
The Vice-Chancellor also released four publications by scientists.
Dr Atul, director of the Extension Education,
said farmers must make use of all extension channels for getting latest farm knowledge.
Dr Ashwani Kumar, scientists in charge, RWRC, said high yielding rice varieties i.e. palam basmati 1 and palam lal dhan 1 had been released for mid hill areas and the centre had produced 4.4 tonnes of seeds of different rice varieties during the season.
He said high yielding wheat varieties i.e. HPW 349 and palam gehun had been recommended for timely sown conditions.
Dr Ripan Sud, project director, Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), gave details about the schemes for farmers by the Department of Agriculture.
