The Empowered Steering Committee (ESC) of the National Ganga Basin Authority (NGRBA) today approved projects to develop ghats and crematoria along the river. The ESC has been constituted by the Ministry of Water Resources.
The projects, whose estimated cost is Rs 2,446 crore, also encompasses afforestation along the river in the basin states. They will be implemented under the Central-sponsored scheme. The Union Government will bear the entire cost of the projects.
Shashi Shekhar, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, heads the ESC. The committee has members from the ministries of environment and forests, finance, urban development, power and governments of the basin states.
The expert panel was constituted with an objective of aiding the clean-Ganga mission.
The other areas identified with regard to the ghats and crematoria are Garhmukteshwar (UP); Buxar, Hajipur and Sonepur (Bihar); Sahibgang, Rajmala and Kanhaiya (Jharkhand); and Delhi.
The projects have been conceptualised to improve the facilities of ghats and crematoria for reducing pollution load into the river. Their main thrust was to ensure natural flow of the river for its rejuvenation.
