PSPCL’s first gas-insulated 66-kV substation comes up in city

The Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) formally inaugurated a gas insulated 66-kV substation, first of its kind in the state, here yesterday.

The substation has been constructed in 1,000 square yard land in Chaura Bazar at a cost of Rs9.50 crore.

Speaking at the occasion, Chaudhri said with surplus power in the state, the power utility had spent Rs 785 crore to strengthen the sub-transmission system in the state during the past three years to provide quality power supply to all categories of consumers.

He said during this period, 94 new 66 kV substations were commissioned, while as many as 507 existing substations were upgraded and 2,381 km length new 66 kV transmission lines were laid to ensure proper power evacuation and grid connectivity.

“Eight-hour power supply was supplied to farmers during the current paddy season throughout the state and the demand for power from all other categories of consumers was met in full during the summer season,” he said.

Elaborating on the ongoing work for upgrade of distribution system in the state to improve quality of power supply, Chaudhri said the work was in progress under the revised accelerated power development and reform programme (R-APDRP) in 47 cities in Punjab.

He reiterated the commitment of the PSPCL in further improving the consumer services with the help of enhanced utilisation of information technology.

Dwelling on the features of the innovative gas-insulated 66-kV substation, NK Sharma, Engineer-in-Chief, Central Zone of PSPCL, said indoor gas insulated 66-kV switchgear equipment had been mounted in a room against the normal requirement of half acre land for the conventional option.

A 20-MVA power transformer has been installed which would feed major commercial hubs in the old city such as Chaura Bazar, Akal Market, Books Market and commercial areas around the Clock Tower roundabout. Uninterrupted power supply of proper voltage profile shall be available round the clock to these areas from now on, he said.

KL Sharma, Director/ Distribution; Sikander Singh, Chief Engineer/TS and SK Gupta, Chief Engineer/Stores and Workshop of PSPCL were also present.
