Panjab University (PU) DST INSPIRE internship camp students today visited various science departments of the university for hands-on experiments.
The students were divided into seven major groups for visiting 12 science departments and museums at zoology, geology and anthropology. Senior faculty mentors from PU interacted with students during laboratory sessions in physics, chemistry, zoology, geology, anthropology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology and biotechnology.
At physics department, the teachers exposed the students to understanding of various measuring instruments like vernier callipers and screw gauge, spherometer, thermometer, dry-wet thermometers, barometer and manometer, concept of monte-carlo simulations, prism, lens, construction of telescope, LEDs and magnetism.
At the department of anthropology, the students were introduced to the concepts of “fingerprint technique” that have been used for identification purposes since decades all over the world. The students were shown the methodology that how the fingerprints are taken and compared followed by hands-on-practice by the students.
The students visited ‘Museum of Man’ that displays life-sized models of fossil hominoids and hominids. The students took keen interest in fossil mammals collected from the Siwalik deposits of northwest India. The children were given a glimpse of various stages of human evolution through life-size models of our early ancestors. Besides, they also learned about the prehistoric animal life that existed in the area around Chandigarh.
