PU first in India to get Twitter profile verified

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has today joined the select league of universities like Harvard and Stanford, whose Twitter profile have been verified by Twitter. The university authorities got this information late last night. Thus, PU has become the first and the only university in India, whose Twitter profile and Facebook page have been verified by the comapnies.

The profile was verified due to the PU’s barnd valle and the authentic details provided by university.

The achievement is likely to add to the popularity of PU around the globe.

A blue badge will now appear next to the university’s Twitter profile, @OfficialPU. The official Facebook page of the university is also popular among students and followed by more than 91,000 of them. It may be recalled that the varsity’s official page on Facebook was also the first of any Indian university, which was verified by Facebook.

The PU Director, Public Relations, Vineet Punia, said the verifications helped in establishing the authenticity of key individuals and brands on the social media.

“Twitter verifies highly sought users in music, acting, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business and other key interest areas. It is a great news that Twitter chose PU to be the first university in the country for verification, he added.

He said the social media had become very important in the information age. “The social media is important for educational institutions as most of the students are connected through Facebook and Twitter,” he added.

The PU Twitter handle was launched by PU alumnus Kiran Bedi on November 21, 2014. The Facebook page of the varsity was launched on October 21, 2013.

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover has congratulated the PU students and thedepartment of public relations for the major achievement.
