PU Khel Ratna conferred on hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr

Legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Senior and former GND University Vice-Chancellor Jagtar Singh Grewal were honoured during the 65th convocation of Panjab University (PU) today. While the hockey legend was given the Panjab University Khel Ratna, the ex-GNDU Vice-Chancellor was honoured with the Panjab University Gian Rattan Award.

One of the greatest Indian hockey players, Balbir Singh Senior’s journey from an obscure village to fame is nothing but a saga of passion, determination and hard work. As a hockey player, he set the standards for the future generations to follow. He was a part of the Indian hockey contingent that bagged the gold in the 1948, 1952 and 1956 Olympics. He was the vice-captain and captain of the Indian team in 1952 and 1956, respectively. He touched the zenith of his career by scoring five goals in the final match against the Netherlands in 1952. This record remains unbroken till date.

The former Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Prof Jagtar Singh Grewal, had begun his teaching career at Panjab University. He also remained the Chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. His first book was published by PU. By now, he has authored over 30 books and 100 research papers. His next book will be published by the Oxford University Press.

Meanwhile, the honorary degree of the doctor of sciences was conferred on noted scientist and PU alumnus, Prof Harkishan Singh. With over 350 publications, 18 books and 14 patents to his credit, he is known for his research on organic and natural chemistry. One of his major achievements is the discovery of chandonium Iodide, a drug named after Chandigarh.
