Machhiwara, March 9
The Machhiwara-Rahon bridge over the Sutlej was closed to heavy traffic after a portion of the bridge was found broken.
This broken part of the bridge has raised a question mark over the quality of construction.
The bridge was inaugurated by Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal in 2004. It was specially built for Army movement. But the Army officials had raised questions over the quality of construction.
The bridge has shortened journey between Amritsar and Delhi.
Meanwhile, a team of the PWD, led by Xen Balwinder Singh, visited the bridge. Police personnel were deployed to stop heavy vehicles on both sides of the bridge.
The Xen said the bridge would be repaired soon and normal traffic on the bridge restored in a few days. Shiv Kumar, a social activist, has demanded that this road should be made four lane and the bridge improved accordingly.
