The local railway station, one of the largest commercial metre gauge junctions, will be developed under the Centre’s Adarsh Station Scheme. The station established in 1873 figures in a list of 200 railway stations to be upgraded by the Railway Ministry.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has written to former Rewari legislator Capt Ajay Yadav, informing him about the development. He wrote that approval for the selection of the Rewari station under the scheme had been notified to the Zonal Railways, sources said.

The scheme calls for the beautification of railway stations, besides providing facilities of retiring rooms, separate waiting halls attached with toilets for all classes, computerised public address system, help desks and unreserved ticketing system, sources said.

Capt Yadav said he had written to the Railway Minister for enhancing amenities and construction of a rail underpass at the station. He had also urged the minister to include the station under the scheme.

“Now, the Rewari railway station will have modern facilities,” the former MLA said. Station master Gopal Bhaati said no official information had been received so far. “If the station has been chosen under the scheme, it is good news for city residents.”

“The station has eight platforms and each one requires a separate toilet. The problem will be resolved following the ministry’s decision to upgrade it as an Adarsh station,” he added.
