The Akhil Bharatiya Ror Mahasabha has launched the Jan Jagran Abhiyan against the practice of dowry and “unnecessary expenditure” on ring ceremony, DJ and liquor during wedding functions.

The mahasabha decided against organising “bharam bhoj” (feast for Brahmins) on “rasam pagri” and threatened members of the Ror community with social boycott if they did not follow its decisions.

Under its campaign, the mahasabha today covered six villages — Dayalpur, Alampur, Sunheri, Salarpur, Ishakpur and Fatuhpur — of the district.

Ror mahasabha chief Nasib Singh Karsa said, “To eliminate social evils from the community, the mahasabha has launched an awareness campaign. There are around 275 Ror-dominated villages in Haryana, and nearly 55 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. So far, the mahasabha has covered villages in Karnal, Panipat and Kaithal districts.”

“There is a spurt in social evils because people are spending lakhs of rupees on marriages, elections and at the time of a person’s death. Not only this, several functions are organised before the marriage such as the ring ceremony,” he said, adding people enter into disputes during marriage functions under the influence of liquor, leading youths on a wrong path.

The mahasabha chief said, “Several meetings and panchayats were held and the representatives were of the view only one function should be organised for a marriage. In case of a person’s death, all rituals must be performed within a day.”

The Haryana leg of the campaign would be completed in a month and then meetings would be organised in UP and Uttarakhand, he said.

“To make sure mahasabha’s decisions are followed, committees at the village, block and district level will be formed,” Karsa added.
