Chandigarh, October 11
The Chandigarh Chapter of the Punjab Regiment Officers Association (PROA) held its annual meet here today, with about 120 serving and retired officers from the region getting together to strengthen regimental bonds and relive old memories.
The General Officer Commanding 16 Corps, Lt Gen RR Nimbhorkar, who is also Colonel of the Punjab Regiment, was the chief guest on the occasion.
He gave an overview of the activities of all battalions of the Regiment and discussed various regimental issues with the veterans.
He said the performance of Punjab Regiment battalions deployed on counter-insurgency operations had been commendable.
The Commandant of the Punjab Regimental Centre, Brig GPS Sishodia, was also present on the occasion.
Prominent among the veterans who attended the event were Lt Gen BS Sachhar, Maj Gen Shivdev Singh and Maj Gen KS Sethi.
The President of the Chapter, Col Rajinder Singh, said the Punjab Regiment was the oldest infantry regiment of the Indian Army, with its first unit being raised in 1761. At present, it has 19 regular battalions. It has to its credit a large number of battle honours, gallantry and distinguished service awards. — TNS
