Ludhiana, January 18

Two unidentified assailants on Monday fired shots at the ground, where a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Shakha (RSS) assembly was planned to be held, but there were no casualties as the venue at new Kidwai Nagar Park was vacant, the police said.

BJP leader and RSS Coordinator of Kadwai Nagar Shakha confirmed the incident and said two shots were fired. SHO Avtar Singh said no one has been injured in the incident.

The incident took place today when two motorcycle-borne persons fired shots at the Shakha ground ahead of the assembly of Sangh sanyamsevaks, the police said, adding that the miscreants were wearing monkey caps and hence could not be identified.

DCP Narinder Bhargva said the police party rushed to the spot after receiving information. No one was injured in the firing as assembly of Sangh sanyamsewaks was yet to start, the DCP said.

It may be recalled that terrorists attacked an RSS shakha at Dresi ground here in May 1991 in which five volunteers were gunned down and 15 others were badly injured.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case against the two unidentified assailants under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and sections 25/27 of the Arms Act.

DCP Bhargva, who is supervising the operation against the miscreants, said one cartridge of .32 bore pistol has been recovered from the ground.

He said that all efforts are being made to work out the case at the earliest. The security of the local RSS leaders has also been beefed up.

Parveen Bansal, president of the district unit of the BJP, appealed to the public to remain calm and peaceful. (With inputs from PTI)
