Amritsar, February 4
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, his former MLA wife and his son entered a polling station in private vehicles — an act that violates election code — to cast their vote, sources said on Saturday evening.
Sidhu — a Congress candidate from Amritsar East — his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu and their son Karan Sidhu entered Mata Saroop Rani College in three private luxury cars, sources said. They were stopped at the gate by paramilitary personnel, but were allowed to enter after Sidhu claimed he had special permission.
Election Commission’s rules forbid movement within a polling station in vehicles, with exemptions made for the physically challenged.
Basant Garg, the deputy commissioner who is also a Returning Officer, however said Sihu was granted no such permission and he was currently investigating a complaint he received over the incident.
"If there is enough proof to show that his vehicles were found inside the premises, action will be taken according to Election Commission of India’s rules. Sidhu was not permitted to go there along with his vehicles," Garg said. — PTI
