Education and society are never delinked as society impacts education and education in turn contributes to making a good society.

This was stated by Prof Chetan Singh, Director, Indian Institute of Advance Studies, on the onset of the two-day consultation meeting on Linking Higher Education to Society organised that commenced here today.

The meeting is a part of the wider process by the HRD Ministry of framing the New Education Policy.

Professor Chetan said education could not merely have an operational function as its tasks included building citizens. He expressed concern that considerable fragmentation of knowledge was evident and disciplines like Humanities and Social Sciences were important because they inculcated literacy, which in its widest sense meant the ability to read and understand the world.

Introducing the themes of the consultation meeting, Professor Saumen Chattopadhyay from ZHSS, JNU, outlined various contemporary issues of contention in the field of higher education like the relation between market and society and in turn between society and higher education.
