Chandigarh, January 10
Travelling across the city will now take more time as the UT traffic police have recommended traffic lights at major intersections witnessing vehicle rush.
Lights have already been installed at a roundabout on Madhya Marg and work on another rotary is under way. Next in the line are the Hallo Majra and the Sector 16 stadium roundabouts.
A police official said it was a long-pending proposal. The engineering wing of the UT Administration recently approved installation of traffic lights and work had been started.
The traffic lights have already been installed at the Sector 7/8/18/19 roundabout on the Madhya Marg. Now, traffic around the rotary is being regulated with traffic lights only.
Officials said the work to install lights at the Sector 26/28 Grain Market chowk, the Sector 42/43 Attawa chowk, the Sector 16 stadium roundabout and the Hallo Majra roundabout had also been initiated.
Police officials said a study was conducted on the intersections witnessing heavy rush before it was decided to install traffic lights there. The lights would streamline the traffic on these roundabouts, they added.
“The traffic lights will lessen snarl-up around the rotaries,” said a police official.
The officials admitted that with the installation of traffic lights at different roundabouts, it will take a little more time to reach the destination.
Presently, traffic cops are deployed at these rotaries to regulate the traffic. Depending on the need, more traffic lights may also be installed at other parts of the city.
