UGC nod to yoga dept at Garhwal University

Students and faculty of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University are elated over the announcement by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a full-fledged yoga department on its campus.
The UGC, in a letter to the university, has sanctioned the manpower, infrastructure development and other recurring expenses worth Rs 10 crore for the newly-established yoga department.
Pro Vice-Chancellor DS Negi, while talking to The Tribune, said the university had given presentation before the UGC on September 20 last year for seeking approval to start yoga courses. The recommendations of the committee were placed before the commission in its 521st meeting on February 22, 2017 where these were approved. With this approval, the university would be able to appoint adequate staff, including professors, assistant professors, yoga teachers, therapists and instructors to train the students on yearly basis.
Professor Negi said the university was also contemplating to start several courses after getting approval from appropriate committees set up by the UGC. He said students were elated with this move.
