Vocal recital by Sunanda, Manipuri dance numbers keep audience enthralled

Soulful classical vocal recital by Vidushi Sunanda Sharma and Manipuri dances by Sanjib Bhattacharyya’s group marked day two of the ongoing Pracheen Kala Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan at Tagore theatre here today.
A disciple of Guru Girija Devi, the Banaras ghrana stalwart maestro Sunada Sharma opened up with a reposeful aalap of raga kedar and bada khayal bandish ‘Jogiya mann bhayo’ followed by chhota khayal bandish ‘Chandani raat moko na suhaye’. She presented a thumri in rag ‘Khamaj’ and a rarely sung tappa ‘Gulshan mein bulbul chehki’ in raga bahaar and other compositions. She was accompanied by Mithilesh Jha on tabla and Paromita Mukherjee on harmonium.
Later, the dynamic Manipuri dancer, Sanjib Bhattacharyya, took the centre stage and opened up with ‘Basant raas’ delineating the Holi celebrations by Radha-Krishna followed by ‘Krishnashtakam’ showing glimpses of Krishna leelas. The popular Manipuri dance ‘Pung Cholam’ was a thrilling experience for audience as dancers playing drums presented the Krishna Krira Ras and Tanum. In their next rendering stick dance with sticks which also synonymous with marshal art presented very gracefully. They moved on to present Manjira Natrang and a piece in which Krishna and Radha’s swing festival was presented with beautiful expressions and graceful movements. Sanjib mesmerised the audience with Mridanga dance and Holipala with big drum dances before concluding with Dasavatar amidst applause.
Kendra chairman SK Monga, registrar Dr Shobha Koser and secretary Sajal Koser honoured the artistes . Punita Bawa conducted the stage.
