Panic prevailed in Garhi Cantt and adjoining localities after the body of a young woman was found buried near the Tapkeshwar temple here today. The deceased is yet to be identified.
According to information available, local residents called the police control room this morning after they found the body of the woman buried on the banks of the Tons river near the Tapkeshwar temple.
Pushpak Jyoti, SSP, Dehradun, and other senior police officials immediately reached the spot. It was revealed during preliminary investigation that the body, which was wrapped in a cloth, was completely decomposed as it had remained buried for a fortnight. The police did not rule out foul play in the incident.
The SSP told The Tribune that Garhi Cantt police station and other police stations had been directed to check missing reports so as to establish the identity of the deceased.
He said the deceased seemed to be around 25 years’ old. The Garhi Cantt police had been told to consider all aspects to solve the case soon. “It is too early to say that the deceased woman was buried after she was brutally murdered. The police are considering all aspects to solve the case soon,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police enquired about the woman from local residents, but to no avail. The residents demanded that the police should increase security in Garhi Cantt, Dakra, and the Tapkeshwar temple as these areas had become a hub of anti-social elements. They lamented that several such cases had been reported earlier also.
