Four get 10-yr jail for smuggling narcotics

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Jarnail Singh has convicted four persons on the charge of indulging in smuggling of narcotics. They were ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years each.

Those sentenced include Jaspreet Singh, alias Jassi; Amandeep Singh of Janta Nagar, Ludhiana; Romins of Sant Vihar, Haibowal and Varinder Singh, alias Mani, of Rajan Estate, Haibowal Kalan, Ludhiana. A fine of Rs1 lakh each was imposed upon the convicts.

According to the prosecution, ASI Avtar Singh and other police officials were present on Bhadla Chowk service road on March 9, 2018, for checking purposes.

At 9:15 pm, a taxi came from Mandi Gobindgarh side and was signalled to stop. But the driver, instead of stopping the car, tried to flee. However, a trolla came in front of the car and thus it had to stop.

During the search of the vehicle, a polythene was recovered from the dash board of the car, which contained 425-gram heroin.

A case was registered at Sadar police station on March 9, 2018. The prosecution examined seven witnesses to prove its case.

During trial, the accused pleaded innocence. But after appreciating the evidence on record and convinced with the submissions of Additional Public Prosecutor APS Virk, the court found the accused guilty.
