Prof Jagat Ram of the Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh, has been awarded the “Best of the Best” Award for the second time at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) annual conference held at New Orleans in the US.
“This is truly a unique and exceptional international honour,” Prof Jagat Ram said. Considered the “real Oscar of Ophthalmology”, it is the most prestigious honour bestowed on any ophthalmologist chosen in a global competition. Surgical videos on recent and innovative techniques were submitted from all over the world for evaluation to this Congress. Approximately 120 were shortlisted for presentation during the annual conference and the 10 best surgical videos were selected by a jury of international experts.

This year, Prof Jagat Ram received this award from Prof David R Hardten, the Supreme Judge for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Conference, in an award ceremony for an innovative and inspirational surgical technique performed on children with complicated cataract in persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, which is a birth defect. This eye condition was considered incurable in the past.
