3 communities get OBC status

The state government has released orders for including Rath community living in Pauri, Paikhanda community of Chamoli and Gangadi community of Tehri Garhwal on the OBC list of the state. The orders were released on December 21.

It was recommended by the state Cabinet. This latest inclusion will now take the number of OBC communities in the state to 90.

The Rath community, residing in eight settlements of Pauri, comprises Ghuddodsu, Dhaijyuli, Chopda Kot, Chauthan among other clans.

The Paikhanda community of Joshimath will benefit from the reservation. In Tehri Gahrwhal, the Gangadi community resides in Thauldar block.

These communities will be able to reap benefit from the reservation policy of the state government, wherein certain percentage of seats in government jobs are reserved for OBCs.

The Central Government has already included Dhiman and Rajbhar OBC communities of Uttarakhand on its list.

Significantly, the OBC commission of the state has submitted a new proposal of inclusion of 20 OBC communities from Uttarakhand on the Centre’s list of OBCs. In case, this is taken up, it will provide them reservation in the Central Government jobs as well.
