Sirsa, March 22
The District Rural Development Authority has decided to set up Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) plants in 333 Sirsa villages under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Sirsa is one of the few districts in the country which is free from open defecation and has won award from the President for the same.
“We have already completed 13 out of the 36 SLWM projects which were to be set up in 2014-15. Work on 23 more projects are in progress and will be completed by the end of this month,” said Sharandeep Kaur Brar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sirsa.
Brar is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District Rural Development Authority and looks after the Swachh Bharat Mission in the district.
She said the authorities had set a target of bringing up SLWM projects in 73 more villages in the district in 2015-16.
“The rest of the villages will be taken up in the coming years. The authorities have planned to engage collection teams in all the villages under the public private partnership (PPP) mode to bring solid waste of villages to SLWM plants,” she said.
The collection teams would charge Rs 10 to Rs 15 per month from each household for collecting waste, segregating bio-degradable and non-biodegradable wastes and transporting it to the SLWM plants, she added.
She said the bio-degradable solid waste would be converted into manure and sold to farmers and the non-biodegradable waste would be sold to scrap dealers for recycling.
“The collection teams have already been engaged for Thiraj and Ghorianwali villages,” she said.
The authorities have planned to channelise liquid waste by constructing a pond outside villages.
“The authorities have achieved 107.24 per cent target for constructing household toilets, 100 per cent target for school toilets and 92.49 per cent for anganwadi toilets,” she added.
