Ambala, March 28
The election of the chairman and the vice-chairman of the 15-member Ambala Zila Parishad was postponed as ADC-cum-presiding officer Monika Malik was on leave due to illness today.
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Makhan Singh Labana, a member of the Zila Parishad, alleged that the election was postponed at the behest of senior BJP leaders as the party did not have a majority in the House.
INLD leaders — Surjeet Singh Sonda, Balwinder Punia, Sheesh Pal Jhandehri, former MLA Rajbir Singh Barara— and party workers protested in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They also raised slogans against the state government.
They also submitted a memorandum to the DC, alleging that the election was postponed for benefiting the BJP.
DC Ashok Sangwan assured the INLD leaders that a new date for elections would be announced very soon.
He clarified that the elections were postponed due to the ADC’s illness.
