The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned two armed battalions for Punjab to strengthen its second line of defence. Punjab DGP Suresh Arora said the battalions, with strength of 1100 personnel, would be equipped with the latest weapons and technology to safeguard any cross border intrusion in the border districts.

He was here to attend the Police Commemoration Day at the Punjab Armed Police headquarters.

Speaking on the current status of the newly formed Bureau of Investigation (BOI), Arora said around 5,000 vacancies had been created as a separate cadre which would also have a civil cadre comprising of law officers and forensic experts.

He said that the BOI would help improve the conviction rate from the present 37 per cent to a new high.
