Following complaints from students as well as their parents regarding the recently held Class XII Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams claiming them tough and lengthy, the Jammu Sahodaya School Complex (JSSC) recently took up the matter with the authorities in Delhi and apprised them of the concerns.
The JSSC, which is an apex body of all CBSE-affiliated schools in the city, in the crucial meeting, which was attended by principals of all schools at Jammu, had discussed the issue.
KCS Mehta, JSSC president and principal of Army Public School (APS), Akhnoor, said, “Like other parts of the country, we, too, received numerous complaints from both students and their parents who said the maths exam was very tricky and it was of the IIT-JEE standard”.
“We have apprised the CBSE, Delhi, of our grievances and requested them to set board paper from NCERT books. Students claimed that the paper had more questions on ‘higher-order thinking skills’ as compared to previous years,” he added.
The JSSC president said principals of most CBSE schools had received complaints regarding tricky questions in the maths exam. Students, too, complained that the paper was complicated, lengthy and contained twisted questions. “That is why we had unanimously decided to take up this important issue with the CBSE, Delhi, so that it does not happen in future,” Mehta said.
The CBSE faced flak for setting around 50 per cent questions on “higher order thinking skills” (HOTS), which should ideally be around 10 to 20 per cent, though most of these were broadly based from the syllabus. But students claimed that these questions were of a higher difficulty level, requiring in-depth conceptual understanding.
The JSSC president also disclosed that the Jammu chapter was planning to host the upcoming National Sahodaya School Complex (NSSC) meeting, which was to be attended by around 1,000 principals of CBSE-affiliated schools across the country.
“Yes, we are planning to host the prestigious meeting, but first of all we have to confirm whether the meeting has been allotted to any other school complex or not. If not we will definitely go for the proposal and if everything goes well it will be for the first time that the meeting will be hosted by the JSSC”, KSC Mehta opined.
He added that the JSSC had also increased its circle of activities with more focus on sports for the overall personality development of students apart from achieving excellence in academics.
