Karnal, January 1
The district administration has decided to install 10 vending machines to provide sanitary napkins to 10 government-run educational institutions.
Swayamsiddha, an NGO, will assist the district administration to implement the initiative by the name of Sakhi from January 26, said J Ganesan, Deputy Commissioner.
He said three government colleges and seven senior secondary schools had been identified for the initiative. Besides vending machines, incinerators will be installed at the washrooms for disposal of napkins.
“It will spread awareness among the girls about personal hygiene. A set of three napkins will cost Rs 10. They have to insert a coin of Rs 10 in the vending machine which will release a set of three napkins,” he asserted.
Two AASHA workers, chosen by the Health Department, will be assigned the duty of maintaining the supply of sanitary napkins in the institutions. They will be given vehicles for this purpose, the DC said.
The girls would be made aware of the project through workshops, said Dr Ranjana Sharma, president, Swayamsiddha.
She said unhygienic practices generate several diseases among girls which were dangerous for them. There were around 5,000 girls students studying in different educational institutions and this initiative would benefit them, Dr Ranjana said.
