Dr Krishan Kant Paul was sworn in as the sixth Governor of Uttarakhand at a function in Raj Bhavan on Thursday. Acting Chief Justice of the Nainital High Court VK Bisht administered him the oath of office and secrecy.
Paul took over from Aziz Qureshi, who has been transferred to Mizoram.
While initiating the proceedings, Chief Secretary N Ravi Shankar read the warrant of appointment issued by the President of India after which Paul was administered the oath of office.
Paul soon after taking the oath delivered a short address reiterating his commitment to uphold democratic values while discharging his constitutional responsibilities. “Uttarakhand is endowed with rich resources which, if harnessed properly, could inspire the entire country. I am sure the present government is working in that direction,” he said.
Later, the Governor inspected the guard of honour given by soldiers of the 11 Sikh Light Infantry unit stationed here.
A former Indian Police Service officer, Paul had earlier been Governor of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Chief Minister Harish Rawat, his Cabinet colleagues Indira Hridayesh, Dinesh Dhanai, Speaker of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly Govind Singh Kunjwal, Leader of the Opposition Ajay Bhatt and other dignitaries attended the function.
Attends Ganga aarti
Haridwar: Newly appointed Governor Dr Krishna Kant Paul attended the world famous Ganga aarti at Brahma Kund at Har-ki-Pauri in Haridwar today.
The Governor arrived at the state guest house at Damkoti where he was welcomed by Mayor Manoj Garg, in charge District Magistrate Ranjana, SSP Sweety Aggarwal, other senior government department officials and eminent citizens.
In the evening, the Governor along with his family members took part in the Ganga aarti. He also witnessed the aarti from the Malviya ghat where he performed rituals.
Previous Governor Aziz Qureshi, who has been appointed Mizoram Governor, had also visited Har-ki-Pauri after assuming charge in 2012. Due to reservation shown by a section of teerth purohits and pundits, he had witnessed the Ganga aarti from the VIP ghat, which is at some distance from Har-ki-Pauri.
