The Municipal Corporation today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, for setting up two Nisargruna bio-gas plants based on biodegradable waste in Chandigarh.
MC Joint Commissioner Rajiv Gupta signed the MoU with Dr Sharad P Kale, scientist of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.
According to the MoU, these two Nisargruna bio-gas plants each of 5 tonne capacity based on biodegradable waste will be set up in Chandigarh at a cost of Rs 20 lakh per tonne. The MoU was signed after the approval of the general house of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh.
The first plant will be set up in the Industrial Area, Phase I, as a pilot project. The plant will get segregated kitchen/organic wet waste from hotels and bio-degradable waste from the vegetable market. This will lead to methane gas formation, which will be further used for generating electricity. The fertiliser generated as residue will be used in horticulture. The second plant is likely to be set up in Sector 26 or Maloya.
