The police have registered 12 FIRs and arrested many people under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. They have also recovered over 20,000 tablets containing intoxicant substance, hundreds of bottles of Rescof containing Codeine and poppy husk powder.

The police have recommended cancellation of drug license of eight chemist shops in the district.

Ashwin Shenvi, SP, Sirsa, had launched the abhiyan. He said the drive would have three phases. It would include checking consumption and trafficking of intoxicants and rehabilitation of drug addicts.

“After joining as Sirsa SP, I found that the menace of drug addiction was alarming in Kalawali and Dabwali subdivisions of the district. More than addiction of opium and its products like poppy husk, addicts use medical products like intoxicant injections, tablets and capsules. These medical products are being sold by chemists without prescription,” he said.

Besides, reports of poppy husk and opium trafficking had been received from Odan and Baragura blocks of the district, he said.

The SP said under the first phase, the district police conducted raids and arrested people selling drugs.

“Under the second phase, we will initiate proceedings to confiscate properties of drug traffickers under Section 68-A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and under the third phase, we will involve NGOs to ensure rehabilitation of drug addicts.” he added.
