Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), has recently taken a decision to alert consumers about scheduled and unscheduled power cuts through SMS. The necessary exercise to create a database of domestic and commercial consumers of Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of the state was already on.

Electricity consumers often complain about erratic power cuts. The situation turns worse when employees deployed at sub-divisional offices do not attend to phone calls during power cuts. Residents living in rural areas are the worst affected as the government water supply is also affected due to erratic power cuts.

Learning from the experience, the UPCL has drafted a blue print to create a database of nearly 19 lakh electricity consumers in the state. The SMS on electricity billed amount, scheduled power cuts, and expected time to restoration of electricity supply will be sent to the consumers in the affected areas.

PC Dhyani, an official spokesperson for the UPCL, said the information technology (IT) cell of the corporation had been directed to expedite updating of the mobile numbers of the consumers in the system. Meter readers had been instructed to update the mobile numbers of the consumers so that they could be informed about the latest schemes or services also.
