UT to constitute panel to monitor heritage

After the recent theft of the heritage furniture, the Administration has taken slew of measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Sources said that UT Adviser Vijay Kumar Dev has issued direction to constitute a committee of experts to monitor the heritage furniture of the different departments.
The committee will comprise members from different field. The committee will monitor and coordinate with ifferent departments.
Meanwhile, Anurag Agrwal, Home Secretary, has also issued direction today to all the departments to enhance the security of the heritage furniture lying in their stores.
Surjit Singh, an architect, said that had the recommendations of the expert committee formed on the direction of the Ministry of Home Affair been implemented by different departments seriously, the recent theft of the heritage furniture from the Government College of Art could have been prevented.
Concerned over the recurrent theft of the heritage materials, the MHA constituted an expert committee under the chairmanship of the Administrator to suggest steps to preserve the heritage materials and original character of the city.
The 11-member committee comprised experts in the field and representatives of the Government of the India. The committee suggested preparing the inventory of the heritage items.
Sources said that most of the departments were yet to submit the exact inventory of the heritage items designed by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret in the city. There are many departments like the university, PGI, Haryana PWD Department, Government College for Girls in Sector 11, Chandigar,h College of Architect, PEC University of Technology, UT Secretariat, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Punjab and Haryana High Court and several other departments where the heritage furniture are kept .
The heritage items, include drawings, murals, models, tapestries, chairs, tables and so on. The committee suggested each of these items were tagged as heritage and keep them in safe custody.
