Want to get a residence certificate? There is no need to make several visits to the patwaris now, as school and college principals have been authorised to do the needful.
The non-availability of patwaris because of their frequent strikes was adding to the woes of people. Students were also at the receiving end as they needed residence certificates during admission to schools and colleges.
The decision has come as a huge relief for residents. When asked about the initiative, Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat said students were facing a lot of problem as patwaris, especially those who have been given additional charge, were not signing the documents.
“I have authorised signatures of the principal or nambardar or sarpanch, as valid proof for getting these certificates made as it is a matter of students’ future. No Act mentions that only patwaris should sign on such documents. The only consideration is that a tehsildar should be satisfied with the report that the person is genuinely a resident of that area, and the principal of the institution for that matter, is the best person to give such certificate.”
“The move will definitely reduce the harassment, as it had become a big problem due to patwaris’ strike. We were at our wits’ end. Now that a patwari’s signature is no longer required, it will definitely prove helpful,” a city resident said.
