Beauty with brains

While sharing that Mrs India Gladrags Pageant has been running for over 11 years, and Megamodel Manhunt has been on for 22 years, Maureen Wadia, president of Gladrags Beauty Pageants, explains the standard prerequisites for winning the pageant. But first, she throws a few names our way, including Lisa Ray, Kangana Ranaut, Lara Dutta, Deepti Gujral, Dino Morea, John Abraham, Sonu Sood, and Vidyut Jamwal—all being the glorious finds of Gladrags model-hunt pageants.

“It takes me a glance to know who the winner is. It’s not just about good looks, but intelligence and personality too. What puts me off is arrogance,” says Maureen Wadia. She was in Chandigarh to judge the finale of the Gladrags Bombay Dyeing Mrs India North India Pageant and Gladrags GoAir Megamodel Manhunt North India Pageant and was accompanied by captain of Kings XI Punjab Glenn Maxwell and his team. 

Considering that good looks play a key role in deciphering the winner for such beauty pageants, we considered it imperative that “good looks” be defined. Maureen was all too willing to explain, “Good looks don’t necessarily apply to the general conception of beauty like tall, fair, and perfect stats. Camera lies; and it’s only what looks good on camera that I am concerned about. Also, one has to be in shape. These days, being fit is synonymous with being healthy.” Of course, her definition of good looks defies, if not much then slightly so, the choices made by the Gladrags with reference to the names Maureen mentioned before she explained good looks. 

So, is it that model-hunt pageants reinforce the conventional, and a wee-bit westernised, idea of beauty? “You see, the modelling business is all about being a clothes horse and of course a design on a size six model will sell more than the design on size 16 model. But I am not particularly obsessed with size zero models,” she justifies.
