Unlike others who carve a niche for themselves in the music industry, Asmita was never a starry-eyed kid. Back in her childhood days, she did not harbour dreams of becoming a popular playback singer. It was a wish her parents made for her. They yearned to see their daughter as a top-notch singer, some day. And here she is, ecstatically announcing that she has successfully made it to the top 250 list of Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa-2016.

“I wanted to make their dream come true, and now, their dream has become mine!” smiles Asmita Garg, all set to don her professional name— Akqira.

Nothing beats a good voice

With hordes of ‘singers’ going in for auto-tuning and other fancy techniques to polish their voices, does not the value of a genuinely good voice suffer in the process ? “It is true. These days, anyone can claim to be a singer. But then, originality always emerges victorious over the made-up voices.” Prod her to elaborate on her remark, and she explains, “Every time a piece of voice is fiddled with, it shows. A technologically modified voice can never win over one’s original voice-quality.”

Punjabi culture

She is young, but she realises fully well, that as a youngster who hails from Punjab, it is her duty to keep the culture of her region alive and kicking. The self-confessed admirer of Lata Mangeshkar and Sunidhi Chauhan, informs us, “I make it a point to include Punjabi folk music in my performances by fusion or in its original form.”

Practice is the key

The 18-year-old, shares that singers should never undermine the importance of riyaaz and guru’s pearls of wisdom. As she puts it, “Practice is the key. If you skip a day’s riyaaz, you tend to lag. We singers have to practice every single day without fail.”

Having said that, the girl who claims that hard work coupled with luck is important to taste success says, the combination “always works wonders.”
