Desi stars rock
Jasmine Singh
The much-talked-about film Udta Punjab is in news almost each day, either for its bold subject or for the on-screen looks of the leading actors. In a recent interview, actor Shahid Kapoor spoke at length about his totally insane character, Tommy Singh, a rockstar, and all the jazzy looks that he sports in the film.
With a man bun, tattoos shinning on his head, and in yet another look, unkempt long hair, falling all over his face, this reel rockstar is out giving a new look to the Punjabi rockstar image. We on the other hand, bring in names from the Punjabi music industry, which are known to be the real rockstars, each one sporting its own signature style.
Our man, always
Gurdas Maan
He is known as the eternal jogi of the Punjabi music industry, a man who set up a benchmark in singing as well as style. Anyone who has seen him perform live can vouch for his energy and distinct style. “Chaadra, kurta, kaintha around his neck, a dafli, ghungroo creating that magical voice, and a head band (in the older days), Gurdas Maan has always stuck to this traditional style. No matter where he is performing, his attire hasn’t changed a bit over the years,” shares young Punjabi singer A Kay.
Jazz it up
Jazzy B
They say he is the guru of funky styles, which he is known to carry with elan. Youngsters find him the most-stylish singer, who has more hair colours on his head than we have seasons in Punjab! “Jazzy B is indeed a fashion icon, even though he experiments with his hair styles; certain things like the two shades of streaks in his hair, the huge trademark gold chain, gold tooth, spikes, and golden shoes,” says singer Manveer.
Long live
Hans Raj Hans
A sufi Singer who sings and looks Sufi, in every which way! Long curly locks, a thick-beaded necklace, a bright sherwani or kurta along with pyjama and loops hanging from his ears, this has been the singer’s style always. “Hans Raj Hans is a rockstar in his own right, in fact, he has all the elements that make one, in terms of singing and style both,” shares singer Manraj Grewal who sports Hans Raj’s look currently.
Bling bling
Malkit Singh
The Bhangra king is credited for bringing in bling into the music industry, which shows on his turban and attire both. “Malkit Singh has always sported fusion dressing. He is a singer who added bling to his turban, jackets and pants as well. So much so that his moves on stage are totally like a rockstar,” singer-actor Gitaz adds.
Yo! Honey
Yo Yo Honey Singh
Tattoos, Mohawk hair style, long shirts, hanging tracks or trousers, base ball caps...for a long time, youngsters have followed Yo Yo Honey Singh’s on-stage style. “There is some coolness about him. He is a singer-rapper who dared to go on stage with sun glasses on; he performs like Snoop Dog, Eminem and other international stars,” shares actor Karamveer Sandhu.
Jimmy Choo man
Diljit Dosanjh
The world is raving about his acting, his singing talent, but more than anything else, his carefree and cool style. Sunday is longer than Monday is Diljit’s on-stage style! “He keeps the colours of his turban very urban yet basic; in fact his dressing reminds me of Justin Bieber. And you certainly can’t miss his shoes. He is one singer who has the perfect combination of desi and contemporary styles, indeed a true rockstar,” adds director Rohit Jugraj.
