Feeling witty, feminist, narcissistic or plain nasty—you don’t need a trend for this one; all you need is the mood. Ah! The right mood! On your sleeve is just an old phrase; if it’s on your tee, it’s a statement. Essentially for the young at heart, celebrities have long sported statement tees. A couple of years ago, Esha Gupta’s Let Me Ask My Mom t-shirt made more headlines than probably her movies ever have! Sporting the tee with checkered pants, she not only pleased all the mommies out there, but also the forever cynical fashion critiques judging airport looks.

Some of us, perhaps, still recall Naomi Campbell’s famously infamous tee that read loud and clear Naomi Hit Me. Only the back continued… And I loved It. Was the supermodel trying to make fun of the allegations that she attacked her personal assistant? Well, we really don’t know whether her PA found it funny, but paparazzi thought it was worth a thousand pictures! Back in B-town, there’s been no dearth of lead actresses sending out strong messages on feminism — be it Anushka Sharma’s much photographed, We Should All be Feminists to Alia Bhatt’s F for Feminism.

At airport, party, mall, beach…

Where you wear your tee, obviously, matters the most. There’s no denying the attention that an otherwise plain tee can get you. As effortless and uncaring as they appear, there needs to some amount of thought before you decide to go ahead and carry that ‘public notice’!

“If you’ll notice carefully, celebrities often reserve the statement tees for their airport looks, charitable events or very casual appearances. Even harmless statements will attract a lot of attention,” Ludhiana-based designer Suhaavi, running the prêt label, Su, quotes from her personal experience. “It’s very important that statement ones are loose-fitting; even if they are slightly fitted, they can look tacky, very easily.” Last but not in the bit least, you ought to match your mood!
