A brief spell of pre-monsoon rain early this month brought miseries for residents of several localities in Hisar town in the absence of proper drainage. The Meteorological Department at Hisar says that around 54 mm of rainfall due to western disturbance and the Vayu cyclonic effect was recorded in the town.
Besides low-lying localities, which have been facing the perennial problem of water-logging, even the below normal rain early June inundated roads, civil hospital complex and many parks, causing inconvenience to people. The waterlogged colonies such as Jawahar Nagar, Urban Estate, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Azad Nagar, parts of Sector 15 and Model Town faced the worst situation.
Besides, the main road such as the Delhi road, many roads in Sectors 13, 16, 17 and other localities witnessed a flood-like situation due to the rain. The newly laid streets in Jawahar Nagar and Shanti Nagar caved in after the brief rain. An under-construction nullah on the Delhi road too caved in near Vidhyut Nagar, causing rain to waterlog the area.
Saurabh Thukral, a resident of Urban Estate, says that though it is a posh colony set up by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), a major part of it got flooded due to the brief spell of rain. “During the rainy season, the situation becomes grim, as rainwater starts entering houses and the sewerage gets choked. We have complained to the district authorities many times in the last several years but without any positive response. Our colony getting waterlogged due to rain has become a regular problem,” he says.
Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Dogran Mohalla, says that in the absence of a proper drainage system in Sanian Mohalla to Multani Chowk, the roads in the locality remained submerged for hours after the rain. He wrote to the municipal corporation authorities for the construction of a drain along the road for the discharge for rainwater. Traffic had to be diverted via the Police Lines area as the Kaimari road was waterlogged. This road is in a dilapidated condition.
Vishal Kumar, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department (Building and Roads), says that the under-construction nullah in the town is capable of discharging rainwater. He hopes that the problem of waterlogging in most of the areas in the town will be sorted out with the completion of the drain.
