An NRI was killed as his SUV collided with a tree on the Karnal-Indri state highway near Salaru village last night. The deceased, Ranjeet Singh (29), was a native of Maulawala village in Muktsar district (Punjab). He was going to Salaru village to meet his maternal uncle.

The incident came to light in the morning when a passerby informed the police about an overturned SUV in the fields. Ranjeet came from Canada to attend his brother’s wedding which was solemnised on December 31, the police said. He was scheduled to return to Canada on January 11, said Ranjeet’s relative.

People living near of accident spot blamed the narrow Karnal-Indri highway and heavy traffic on it for regular accidents. The four laning of the highway is underway, but the pace of work has been reportedly slow.

In the past six months, more than 10 persons have lost their lives in mishaps on the Karnal-Indri road.

On December 30, a man was killed and three women were injured as the car they were travelling in collided with a truck near Baldi bypass. On November 4, a truck crushed a motorcycle-borne man to death near Ramba village.
