In violation of the order of the Supreme Court prohibiting signage, placard or hoarding about availability of liquor near national and state highways, Oasis Tourist Complex, a government undertaking, has put up a placard here saying “Enjoy chilled beer at our Karna Lake bar just near about 501 metres ahead”.

Harman Sidhu, who had filed the original petition which led to the Supreme Court verdict banning liquor sale along national and state highways, would approach the state government over this violation.

“This is in violation of the order of the apex court, which has banned signage and advertisements on availability of liquor near highways. This signage is visible from National Highway 1,” he said.

“Haryana Tourism is a government body and should behave responsibly by following the apex court order. It is setting a precedent for liquor traders, who use every opportunity to flout rules,” he said. “I have sent copies of the complaint to the Chief Secretary, DGP and Karnal DC and SP,” he added.

The in charge of Karna Lake and Oasis Tourist Complex did not consider the act to be in violation of the Supreme court ruling. He said it was displayed in the vicinity of the complex and was not visible from National Highway 1. He made it clear that he would get it removed if it violated norms.

Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner Naresh Kumar said displaying the availability of liquor was banned. “I will get it checked and it will be removed if it is found to be a violation. Action will be initiated against violators,” he said.
