Karnal: Megha Bhandari, a municipal councillor, and Sankalp Bhandari, her husband, were allegedly attacked by Yashpal Mittal, a former councillor, and three other persons in Sector 6 on Wednesday. Sankalp received injuries and was taken to hospital. The police took Mittal and another person into custody. Megha said they were attacked by Mittal, his wife and a few other persons when they were erecting a name board sent by the Karnal Municipal Corporation. Mittal's wife had contested the last election against Megha from the same ward. Mittal refuted the allega tions and said he did not attack anyone. TNS
Gangster held in Jhajjar village
Jhajjar: A gangster, identified as Karamveer, alias Kaju, was arrested from the district's Gudda village on Tuesday after a brief encounter with the police. He was arrested when Kaju, a native of the district's Soldha village, was getting his car repaired. He opened fire on the police when they tried to apprehend him. A car, five pistols and 123 cartridges were seized from him. TNS
Man robbed of Rs 1.41 lakh
Rewari: A man was on Tuesday reportedly robbed of Rs 1.41 lakh in Khera Alampur village of the district. Two unidentified robbers took a bag carrying the cash from an employee of a petrol pump. Parveen Kumar of Pahrajvaas village reported that he went to the Punjab National Bank branch in Khera Alampur village on motorcycle to deposit Rs 1.41 lakh. When stopped his motorcycle near the bank, two robbers on a motorcycle took the bag at pistol point and fled. TNS
332 students get scholarships
Yamunanagar: Under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, Yamunanagar-based Jamna Auto Industries distributed scholarships worth Rs 21 lakh to 332 meritorious students during a function held at Guru Nanak Khalsa College here on Monday. Dr Hukam Singh, controller of examinations, Kurukshetra University, appreciated Jamna Auto Industries and Randeep Singh Jauhar, president of the college managing committee, for the gesture. Sanyam Maratha, head of the CSR activities at Jamna Auto Industries, and Dr Mandeep Singh, principal of the college, also spoke on the occasion. TNS
