For the first time ever since its inception, the Gurugram Municipal Corporation (GMC) today got an all-woman team.

Madhu Azad of the BJP was elected the Mayor unopposed. Congress-backed Pramila Devi Kablana from ward 9 bagged the post of Senior Deputy Mayor, while BJP Councillor Sunita Yadav was unanimously elected Deputy Mayor.

The elections were held in the presence of political leaders and senior bureaucrats. Madhu Azad, who was supported by Union minister Rao Inderjeet Singh, is the wife of Ashok Azad, who has been associated with the party for the past two decades. She had contested the MC elections for the first time from ward 7.

Following initial resistance from the Rao Narbir camp, she became the unanimous choice after state BJP president Subhash Barala held a series of meetings. Sunita Yadav, councillor from ward 33, was also chosen unopposed.

Due to lack of consensus on the post of Senior Deputy Mayor, Pramila Kablana, Councillor from ward 9, was elected to the post by securing 23 of the 35 votes. She had contested the elections as and Independent candidate with the backing of the Congress.

It may be noted that Independents had dominated the list of elected councillors by securing a total of 20 seats. The BJP secured 14 seats despite fielding candidates in all 35 wards. Later, the BJP managed to secure the support of 12 councillors.
