Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Civil Hospital (LNJPCH) has got its first blood component separation unit.

Earlier, patients had to rely on Regional Blood Transfusion Centre in the adjoining Karnal district for the purpose.

“In dengue, a patient needs platelets, while burn victims need plasma. Platelets are required in large quantities in dengue and the unit will be extremely beneficial in such cases,” said a doctor.

Dr Mukesh Kumar, Medical Superintendent, said the hospital received the sophisticated machine for the purpose on Saturday and it would be made operational soon.

“The equipment requires a separate room with a controlled environment for installation. We have started working on it and hope it will be functional in a month,” he said.

Sources said the hospital had been getting a good number of blood units for patients, but it had to rely on the blood component separation facility for blood banks in private hospitals or a government-run facility in Karnal.

The demand for a blood component separator had been pending with the state authorities for several months, said a hospital functionary.
