General DP Vats (retd), BJP Rajya Sabha member, has urged khap panchayats to come forward and play a proactive role in eradicating the drug menace.
He said this at a meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Kaliraman khap panchayat in the district’s Sisay village on Sunday.
“Drug addiction has been a growing menace in society. As khaps hold sway in society, they must take a pledge to launch a social movement against the drug menace,” Vats said.
Kaliraman khap pradhan Virender Singh agreed with the BJP MP. “The panchayat has adopted a resolution to launch a campaign against drug addiction. It will chalk out a detailed action plan to reach out to every section of society, especially the youth, to curb the menace,” he said, appealing to farmers not to resort to crop residue.
Confed chairman Capt Bhupinder Singh said khaps could be effective in not only spreading awareness about the ill-effects of drugs, but also in taking measures to disrupt the supply chain.
